Supporting Increased Vegetation Management in UC’s Hill Campus
We filed a brief on August 27, 2021 stating that UC’s Plan and EIR do not go far enough to assure adequate wildfire hazard reduction, siting the additional work that UC must do.
Fuel levels must be reduced beyond what UC proposes if the campus itself and the homes located nearby are to be spared in a future wildfire. The University underestimates the effect of climate change: higher windspeed, hotter temperatures and increased drought conditions that increase the danger of wildfire and the spread of a wildfire in the community."
Our suit also contends that a suit filed by another party, which wants to scale back UC’s initial vegetation treatment, would actually increase wildfire danger by necessitating untenable, long-term maintenance of plantations of eucalyptus and Monterey pine trees if simply thinned.
The next step in the litigation process is a reply by UC to the two briefs.
