The Claremont Canyon Evacuation Improvement Project will close Claremont Avenue to vehicular, bicycle, and pedestrian traffic. Traffic will be redirected from the intersection of Claremont Avenue and Alvarado Road to the intersection of Claremont Avenue and Grizzly Peak Boulevard. The Road will be open on weekends and holidays (November 26 and December 24-25, 2020).

The project is comprised of fire fuel mitigation work along upper Claremont Ave. on lands owned University of California, Berkeley (UCB). Project activities will take place within UCB Property 100 feet of the edge of pavement along Claremont Ave. The location of work is indicated on the map above, labelled as EST-3. Total project area is approximately 18 acres.

This project will support safe emergency evacuation on Claremont Ave. if, for example, a landslide or wildfire would occur. Currently there are numerous trees and abundant shrubby fuels near Claremont Ave. that can fall across the road and block traffic or burn with such intensity that passage is prohibited during a wildfire. This work is part of the other fire management plan implementation activities in the Hill Campus.

UC Fire Trails: Fire trails on UC land leading to upper Claremont Avenue will also be closed, as indicated on the map below.
