UC Berkeley students lend a hand to the Berkeley community by doing habitat restoration in Claremont Canyon. The students partner with volunteers from the Claremont Canyon Conservancy, working on East Bay Regional Park district land and UC-owned land, removing French broom, spreading native grass seeds, shoveling and spreading wood chips, pulling out trash out of the creek and ravines and maintaining trails.
Joe Engbeck of the Claremont Canyon Conservancy invites Mia Monroe, Head Ranger from Muir Woods, to walk and talk in the upper part of Claremont Canyon where eucalyptus were removed and redwood trees planted in 2004. Redwood reforestation in this area began in the 1970s, spearheaded by the Rotary Club, and was reimplemented under sponsorship of the Claremont Canyon Conservancy in coordination with UC Berkeley in 2004.
